Dixie Chicks singer Natalie Maines is the target of a defamation lawsuit. The lawsuit filed by the step-father of one of three slain boys in 1993.
Maines spoke out for three people convicted of the slayings and alleged the stepfather was instead involved in the killings.Terry Hobbs, stepfather of Steve Branch, who was killed in 1993 with Christopher Byers and Michael Moore, filed suit in Pulaski County Circuit Court on Nov. 25.
Maines attended a Dec. 19 rally in Little Rock, where she claimed Jason Baldwin, Damien Echols and Jessie Misskelley _ known to sympathizers as the “West Memphis Three” _ were innocent and that supposed new evidence pointed to Hobbs.
“I want people to know I haven’t done nothing wrong,” Hobbs said. “I want them to hear it from me.”
The lawsuit says Maines’ statements were “so extreme in degree as to be beyond the pale of decency and to be regarded as atrocious and utterly intolerable in civilized society.”
The boys’ bodies were found by police a day after they vanished from their neighborhood on May 5, 1993. Police arrested the three after a confession by Misskelley in which he described how he watched Baldwin and Echols sexually assault and beat two of the boys as he ran down another trying to escape. A jury gave Misskelley a life-plus-40-year sentence for the killings. A later jury gave Baldwin a life sentence without parole. Echols, then 19, the oldest of the three, received the death penalty.
Celebrities, including Maimes, rallied and raised over $1 million to pay for lawyers and new tests for the three convicted. A judge has denied motions for a new trial.
The star of Hannah Montana, Miley Cyrus, is probably ecstatic right now. The Disney Channel has officially called for season three of the popular show.
Gary Marsh, president of Disney Channels Worldwide, made the announcement Tuesday, saying, “The talent behind Hannah Montana has made it a true global sensation and cultural icon not just on television, where it topped the ratings on Disney Channels around the globe, but as a chart-topping music act and beyond.”
Hannah Montana, which also stars Cyrus’ dad Billy Ray Cyrus, is the No. 1 basic cable series among kids 6 to 11.
NeNe Leakes, star of The Real Housewives of Atlanta, is no longer living at the 5,000-square-foot, 5-bedroom home shown on the hit Bravo series.
According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, she and her husband, real estate investor Gregory Leakes, left the property in November — a month after an eviction notice was filed by Winwood Properties.
The notice, filed Sept. 24 with the Magistrate Court of Gwinnett County, said Greg Leakes owed $6,240 in past due rent. “The tenant said they would move by Sept. 14th because they could no longer afford the house,” the notice read.
NeNe would not reveal where she is currently living. “It’s none of your business,” she told The Journal-Constitution in an e-mail.
She stressed that the eviction notice did not have her name on it. “You don’t know my relationship with Greg,” she said, “so be careful what you report!”

O.J. Simpson could spend the rest of his life in Nevada’s prison.
Simpson, 61, former football star, actor and TV pitchman will be sentenced Friday along with a co-defendant in a hearing.
Simpson will spend a minimum of six years in state prison and could be held for life if the judge imposes maximum penalties or decides to run the sentences consecutively.
Court documents filed Tuesday indicate the state Parole and Probation Division has recommended that Simpson and his co-defendant get at least 18 years in prison.
Simpson’s lawyer, Yale Galanter, plans to ask Judge Jackie Glass for the minimum sentence. Galanter said he would argue that Simpson has no prior convictions. In ordinary cases, the lack of a prior criminal record weighs heavily at sentencing.
Galanter, who believes that Simpson’s jury was punishing him for the Los Angeles murders, said he hopes the judge will not do the same thing.
“If our country has gotten to the point where your acquittals count against you, we have a major problem,” said Galanter, who wants to present witnesses at sentencing, notably the two memorabilia dealers who testified that Simpson robbed them.
Dallas Stars hockey player Sean Avery has been suspended indefinitely for comments he made to a reporter before a game in Calgary, Canada.
Avery made a public dig at Calgary Flames defenseman Dion Phaneuf, who is dating his ex-girlfriend and actress, Elisha Cuthbert.
“I am really happy to be back in Calgary, I love Canada,” he said. “I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don’t know what that’s about. Enjoy the game tonight.”
After the National Hockey League suspended him for “inappropriate public comments, Stars owner Tom Hicks had this to say, ”I completely support the league’s decision to suspend Sean Avery. “Had the league not have suspended him, the Dallas Stars would have. This organization will not tolerate such behavior, especially from a member of our hockey team. We hold our team to a higher standard and will continue to do so.”
Avery signed a four-year, $15.5 million deal with the Stars last summer. He previously played for the New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings and Detroit Red Wings before that.
AmyWinehouse‘s husband Blake Fielder-Civil is back behind bars.
He has allegedly tested positive for drugs, breaking one of his bail conditions. UK’s The Sun also reports that he ran away from his UK rehab facility Tuesday night to visit his estranged wife, who is being hospitalized in London.
Now, Fielder-Civil could be in prison until 2010. He checked into rehab a month ago as part of his early release from jail.
Fielder-Civil recently confessed that he was to blame for Winehouse’s drug problem and that he introduced her to crack cocaine.
“I dragged Amy into it, and without me, there is no doubt that she would never have gone down that road,” Fielder-Civil told the U.K.’s News of the World. “I ruined something beautiful.”
Fielder-Civil also stated that he wanted to end their marriage to save her. And if need be, he would kill himself so that she can get better because he knows that being with her wil kill her.
He was sentenced to prison this year for beating up a North London pub owner.
