Jayson Williams, former NBA player with the New Jersey Nets, was arrested and charged with a DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) this morning (January 5).
According to multiple reports, his black Mercedes-Benz swerved off a winding northbound exit and struck a tree in Manhattan. The crash occurred about 3:15 a.m., the police said. Williams suffered a laceration to his head and was taken to Bellevue Hospital Center.
When officers arrived at the crash site, Williams was in the passenger seat and he said that someone else had been driving. However, there were witnesses to the crash reported seeing Williams in the driver’s seat.
Police have now charged Williams with one count of driving while intoxicated.
First reports were that Williams had minor injuries. However, after being taken to the hospital, reports now say that Williams is suffering from a fractured neck.
This is not the first trouble Williams has gotten himself into. He was involved in the shooting and death of a limousine driver in his home in New Jersey. He was arrested and tried. He now faces a retrial on a charge of reckless manslaughter in that case.
