Sports Illustrated has named New York Yankee star Derek Jeter as their “Sportsman of the Year” in the New York yesterday, December 2nd.
“It’s mind-boggling, it’s kind of hard to believe,” Jeter said of receiving the honor. “It was completely unexpected … This is an award that has so much respect that goes in it.”
Jeter batted .334 while leading the New York Yankees to their fifth World Series title in his 14 full seasons.
Jeter was chosen as the 56th honoree (the issue will hit newsstands today, December 2nd) and becomes the first Yankee to be named SI’s Sportsman.
