The Mexico City premiere of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” has been postponed due to the outbreak of swine flu, which has claimed the lives of over 100 people in Mexico.
Twentieth Century Fox has yet to announce a make-up date for the premiere, which was originally scheduled for Wednesday.
“We were not only concerned about Hugh’s welfare – and we would never send anyone into harm’s way – but we also have an enormous office filled with people we care about,” a spokesperson for the studio said. “There was no point in proceeding under the current conditions.”
Hugh Jackman, who plays the title character, was the only star from the film expected to be on hand at the event.
“There is a possibility it could be rescheduled,” the spokesperson added. “Hugh is obviously beloved there so we’ll see what happens. We’ll monitor the situation.”
The effects of the swine flu outbreak have been felt across Mexico, as authorities have asked the nation’s residents to remain inside their house. Schools across the country have also been canceled until May 6, as well as church services and public events.
