A very disastrous fire roared through the back lot at Universal Studios on Sunday. The fire has destroyed the courthouse/clock tower that was used for the “Back to the Future” trilology, a King Kong exhibit and a streetscape seen frequently in movies and TV shows. Also, a vault containing 40,000 to 50,000 movies under the Universal label were destroyed. However, Universal officials have said that all movies and footage can be replaced.
Over 200 firefighters were on the scene for nearly 12 hours getting the fire out, that was said to have started around 4:30 a.m. Several firefighters did receive minor injuries and were treated at a nearby hospital. The last fire to claim all three of these sites wasin 1990, when a security guard admitted and was convicted of arson.
The park will reopen Monday morning with a few less attactions on the back lot tour.
